• In 2019 47,511 American’s died by suicide.

  • In 2019 there were an estimated 1.38 million suicide attempts.

  • Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States and the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10-34.

  • In 2019, 9% of high school students reported attempting suicide during the previous 12 months.

  • While 1 in 5 adults in the United States will experience mental illness, less than half of them will ever obtain treatment, and this is especially true for minority communities.

  • Black females, grades 9-12, were 60 percent more likely to attempt suicide in 2019, as compared to non-Hispanic white females of the same age.

  • At 7.4 per 100,000, the age-adjusted suicide rate for Black populations in 2019 was over half the overall U.S. suicide rate of 13.2 per 100,000.

  • Data are limited on the rate of suicide among people who identify as sexual minorities. However, research has shown that people who identify as sexual minorities have higher rates of suicide attempts compared to heterosexual people.

  • Poverty level affects mental health status. Black or African Americans living below the poverty level, as compared to those over twice the poverty level, are twice as likely to report serious psychological distress.

Crisis can strike any time, day or night. Feelings such as hopelessness, guilt, and loneliness can lead people to think that suicide is their only option. If you or someone you know is at critical or immediate risk, please call 911 immediately. 

Suicide Warning Signs:

·       Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves.

·       Looking for a way to kill themselves, such as searching online or buying a gun.

·       Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live.

·       Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain.

·       Talking about being a burden to others.

·       Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs.

·       Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly.

·       Withdrawing or isolating themselves.

·       Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge.

·       Displaying extreme mood swings.
